Brandon D ChristParticipantLeucine is useful for a carb free insulin spike. You want to spike insulin everytime after a workout. Even if you are ULC and on CNS. Therefore, if you have a training session on a day other than your CNS, leucine is very important because you want to spike insulin without carbohydrates. Leucine is also good for increasing the insulin spike you get from carbs. So they can be used on Carb Nites for a bigger spike.

Got it, I'll keep it in, but any specific mg recommendation for the ULC days versus a CN? Such as 5g or less ULC, 10g on CN? I'm currently using 1 scoop of this whey for PWO and it includes 2716mg of leucine already. Thanks!

5 g if you are ULC is fine. On Carb Nite I would take 5 g with every meal.

Penny DannerParticipantMore ? on this from me….I want to be sure I'm clear:I'm doing CNS. Three-4 days of lifting with 2-three days of hiit or tabata.I know it will be fine for me to do pwo shake with leucine plus more leucine at meals on CN. I'm still confused on if I need the pwo shake on lifting days. What about on hiit days? My hiit is usually about 20 min long.Would it matter that a serving of the whey protein has 12 gms of leucine in it?

Richard SchmittModeratorIt's okay to have a PWO shake for both and the amount of leucine in the whey is fine. It's still okay to add 5g leucine to that.

Penny DannerParticipantHow long is too long after your workout to have your PWO shake? I got home from the gym and ended up doing it anyway even though it was about 1.5hrs after workout. (It is CN so I'm not sweating it but just wondering)

I wouldn't go past 30-45 minutes without one.
Thanks...I'll have it with me next time or at least do it exactly when I get home.
When I was going to a gym, I'd drink it on the way home. Then when I got home, cook a meal and eat.

Note I specifically didn't say ADDED leucine. To me, the aminos giving a bump to MPS is more important than the immediate carbohydrate because I'm just going to be eating carbs in an hour anyway. And the carb powder isn't NECESSARY for the insulin bump, the aminos with the protein powder will give enough of one.

yeah ok in that case we are in full agreement! (: Damn! Though you have opened up another avenue for discussion. Yes protein powders without carbs WILL still produce an insulin bump but without some carbs this is detrimental rather than beneficial imo. This lack of carbs will then lower blood sugar and start a cascade of stress hormones to break down proteins (tissue in this case) to bring the blood sugar back up. Hardly constructive.
