Has anyone tried maple syrup as the high GI carb source in your post workout shake? Do you think it would work as well as the high GI carb powders like waxy maize, dextrose and maltodextrin? Just trying to find a real food source rather than resorting to a supplement. Thanks!

Don’t really want to go with the brown bananas, as recommended in CBL.

I have with pancakes but not with a PWO Shake, could just use regular corn syrup which it is pure glucose.

Check out this list, (http://www.sugar-and-sweetener-guide.com/glycemic-index-for-sweeteners.html) it’s not as high a GI as maltodextrin, dextrose, or other pure glucose forms. Their GI is 100+, while maple syrup is down at 54, close to honey at 50.

You’re looking for a large, quick insulin spike, so the higher GI the better. Go for corn syrup over maple syrup as corn syrup (depending on ingredients.. look for pure corn syrup) is strictly glucose based.

The reason maple syrup is not as good a spiking agent as say dextrose or malto, is because of the large fructose component, (from sucrose content.)

Use maple syrup on pancakes, but leave it out of your PWO shake.

I was just going to post about that! I just read that the GI of maple syrup is in the mid 50s, so probably not a good PWO shake carb source at all! Thanks!
