Ulam25MemberI am going to college next year, but also have to convince my parents this year to pay the extra money for a lot of steak, ground beef, and bacon. What is the most efficient way to eat and achieve 180-200g protein a day while spending minimal cash?

maxwkwMemberFatty ground beef is pretty cheap.

Richard SchmittModeratorYeah ground beef is probably the best way, that and cube steak or eye of round steak. Try getting to Walmart in the mornings when they put out red meat with marked down prices. I do and that's how I get steaks and leaner cuts of ground beef.

Robert GrayParticipantIf your college is anything like mine, you should be able to get a take-out box at the cafeteria, fill it full of burgers, take them back to your fridge and de-bun and eat them as needed.

freshsbGuestThe 'cheapest' way if you can stomach it is offal meat. Most people obviously won't touch so the prices are usually lower. That said if you're willing to try cows heart and lambs heart is probably the best place to start. As the texture and test don't differ to gravely from muscle meat

FairyGuestIf you want the best results you need to eat grass-fed meat. You can still buy cheaper cuts of grass-fed meat.If you want to cut costs, limit what you spend on the carbs. Use dextrose powder in a shake rather than buying junk food.

Get a job or see if your parents will cosign a student loan. You can get some pretty good interest rates and couple thousand should cover the school year. Also consider getting a Sam's Club or Costco membership. You can get ground beef for less than $2 a pound. Ditch bacon, except for an occasional treat. It really isn't worth it's fat and protein content (though the taste is probably worth it).

I will second this to an extent, but sometimes grass fed beef simply isn't worth the money some people have to pay for it due to rather limited access in the States.I also agree on the carbs. A lot of people don't realize how much money junk food is. Potatoes, and in particular, rice, are both very cheap and excellent carb sources.

FairyGuestYou can get a big order of grass fed meat off the Internet and freeze it. It's all about your priorities. If you want it, you'll find a way.

This, true of anything. It may take sacrifice in other areas of your life, but it depends on what your priority is / what you want most.Cory

You can, but there are a two possibilities that my prevent that:1. The OP may not be able to store that amount of beef (if he is living in a dorm this will be a big concern).2. The OP may not have the money at a given to time to pay for that. There comes a certain point where it is more trouble than it's worth. Really, grain fed beef is still an excellent protein source (fat source not so much) and many people have built excellent physiques and got really strong by just eating foods in supermarkets. I think it would be better for some people to eat cheaper foods and not have to stress about their grocery bill.
