bioengineerGuestThe book is like ten bucks – just get it. What do you guys think of SS as a program for a skinny/new lifter? Should I just stay on it until I hit a plateau since its linear progression? I was thinking of staying on it for 12 weeks ish ….thoughts?

Trevor G FullbrightModeratorSS isn't for adding mass, but it's great to start with to build a solid strength base. You will likely add some mass just from lifting anything though.

SS is a great program for functional strength training. You will add mass on SS, but it won't be the same as a program primarily aimed at adding muscle mass. If you're a novice, SS is the program of choice. Supposedly, most of the hypertrophy-aimed programs do not work for novices, though. First, you should get strong in the basic barbell movements and then add in your assistance movements which will contribute to mass.I currently run SS AN w/ backloading, and I have seen some gains. I highly suggest the program.

I think all novice lifters should start with something like SS or SL 5x5. Learning the basics and getting strong is a must to get big.
