mazdak merrikhParticipantI'm finishing the reorientation and hitting up CN tonight but am not feeling sluggish or tired at all. Im losing about a pound a day, and Ive been tracking my meals so im sure ive been at about 25gm of carbs but one night i had one too many vodkas on ice. should I continue as if the day after my night of drunken stupor is day one of Reorientation? Or should i get Ketone strips to check if im ready for pizza tonight? thanks for the help

If you can muster up a memory of how many vodkas exactly, and your carb count is high, you may want to consider last night your Carb Nite and go back to ULC for a minimum of 5 days before your next one. Go with your gut, but I'm inclined to say you spiked insulin enough on day 10 to get back to ULC for another week or so.

GnomerParticipantThe keytone strips aren't the best indicator of being in ketosis.

Ketosis: Should You Use Keto Sticks? - by Kiefer
thanks! I didn't get a response at the time so I decided to go ahead with CN and went into the thermogenic state real quick, I started with a banana then had a few chocolate chip cookies, followed with chili and corn bread, a pumpking ale, then angel hair pasta with butter, ended with some ice cream. I felt a little out of it today but overall I think it was ok that I did CN last night.

CCTMemberIf you were indeed losing 1 pound every day, I cant see any reason not to have the CN. Even if you may have stalled a bit, I would have the CN if you feel like you need it. Sometimes, this is necessary for people who do several hard workouts per week

Tracy JarchowParticipantThe keytone strips aren't the best indicator of being in ketosis.
As I understand ketone strips will indicate whether a person is in ketosis. However, that is completely different than a person being in ketogenesis and burning body fat as ketone strips will not indicate that. That is why Kiefer says ketone strips are useless for determining if you are in a state of burning body fat. When carbs have not been ingested for some time and glycogen levels are low and unavailable in the cells then the body breaks down fatty acids from the fat cells which produces ketones.Ketogenesis is this process by which ketone bodies are produced as a result of fatty acid breakdown. Urine strips will not show this.Ketosis is when the body is producing more ketones than it can currently use and as a result will dump excess ketones into the urine. Urine strips will show this.Ketoacidosis is when the body is not adequately regulating the ketones being produced. This is a not normal condition and the severe buildup of acid can be fatal. Please correct me if I have this wrong. I'm learning all this too!

GnomerParticipantthere are various reasons you might or might not dump ketones in the urine and being in ketosis isn't the only reason which makes the strips mostly useless..

daniel gillParticipantI was doing strict low carb for about 3 weeks and I was consistently in light to moderate ketosis, according to the ketosticks. typical penny breath, strong smelling urine. I had a carb night about 2 weeks ago, and have had 2 since. I still have the penny taste waking up, and the urine smell, but according to the sticks, i havent been in ketosis since. I suspect that theres another hormone clouding the results? or in CNS, im using all the ketones so there's none in the urine? Either way, they dont seem to work anymore. while I suspect they're a good tool for atkins, I don't think they're good for CNS.

that is one reason for it.. the breath and urine smell is a better indicator than the strips..

CellarElfMemberKetone strips are not an accurate indicator of ketosis. *If* you're drinking enough water, your urine won't be either. When your urine is a dark color and smells strong and/or the ketostix are a dark purple, it generally means you just aren't drinking enough. According to my doc, your urine should be a very pale almost nonexistent yellow and should not have a strong odor. Both indicate you need to drink more.My .02...keep your carbs below 10, keep your protein to moderate (.8-1.5gm per kilo of ideal weight) and just figure you're in ketosis. If you want to know for sure, get a meter that tests the ketones in your blood.

Yes, you are now in ketogenesis and you are efficiently burning the ketones for energy. Not really any to measure with the strips.
