KapriceMemberI've got the book and have bought some Nicorette gum.I've read the comments about chewing a bit and sticking in between cheek and gums. How long should we be keeping the gum in our mouths before the nicotine depletes? How long should it stay in the cheek before more chewing?

SpatzModeratorI've heard people say 30 minutes, and I think it says that in Nicotine Declassified. I, however, tend to keep it in my mouth for roughly an hour, because I forget its sitting in my cheek and so I feel it doesn't get depleted within 30 minutes. I just chew it whenever I don't taste it anymore in my mouth. Once I chew it and it has hardly any taste left, I spit it out. Just go with your instincts, your brain is generally pretty good about figuring these things out.

MagParticipantI have been chewing it for a week (Target Brand),and I wish the stuff weren't so sweet.I had read that the nicotine itself tastes peppery, and you definitely get that when the sweetness starts wearing off.And I have had the gum in for an hour and a half and still had a hint of pepper,so I'm not sure when it is truly completely used up.You are supposed to reactivate it every 10 or 15 minutes by chewing it a half dozen times and parking it back between your cheek and gum.But I believe the recommendation is to leave each piece in for 45 minutes or so.The idea is to try not to swallow or lose the juice, but let it absorb between your cheek and gums.

Odd.. Pretty sure nicorette's "instructions" say every minute or two, basically whenever the peppery-ness diminshes.

MagParticipantI don't know that it can be that often. The more you chew it,the more of the active ingredient you will lose by swallowing and digesting it,which does zero for you.OK,I just checked the package and it says approx 30 minutes for a piece, but I can't see how it could hurt to keep it there longer,At 30 minutes it is still so sweet,it overpowers the peppery flavor it should have.It also says no eat or drink 15 minutes prior to using the gum.

SpatzModeratorI chew it quite a bit, and I spit out the saliva. I also don't eat anything for two hours afterwards and before, just because I like to be on the safe side. And its not like I'm hungry or anything. Keep it in as long as you feel you need to, like I said before, I tend to keep it in my mouth for about an hour.
