Normal to have trouble with workouts during CNS reorientation phase?

    Hello all! I'm new to the forums. I've made a lot of progress in the last 4 months; I was at 310 but did a weight loss challenge at my gym and got down to 289, with improvement in body composition (lost 5% body fat). I've kept the weight off but I've been kind of stuck, so when I learned about Carb Nite I was intrigued. My wife and I just started CNS 3 days ago and the scale has finally moved for the first time since July, which is very encouraging.I've been doing a body weight circuit workout on Mon/Wed/Fri (squats, pushups, planks, etc). I missed my workout on Wednesday, partly because we were just starting CNS. I went tonight hoping to get back into it and found that I could barely do any pushups. I have been doing sets of 10, which was a big deal for me because I started only being able to do 3 proper pushups total. My muscles felt like lead and I just couldn't do it.My question is, is this normal during the reorientation phase? Any recommendations for getting through this and still being able to do some work? I'm not after massive gains, just trying to make some modest progress. (Should I just try Shockwave?  8))

    It is normal. I would not do any routine that has high volume work with CNS. SW is perfect with CNS.

    More fat. Fat is your fuel now, and if you eat enough there isn't much difference in strength (not for me anyway). The only real difference is strength endurance, which does go down somewhat.

    I find that my absolute strength (1 rep max) is unaffected by CNS but anything above 5 reps seems really hard. As well as subsequent sets. I just seem to run out of gas a little faster.

    Thanks for the replies. Good to know that it doesn't necessarily mean things are terribly out of whack. I've been eating plenty of fat, so I think that's probably ok.  I assume the higher volume is a problem because of the lack of carbs?

    There's also the fact that the first couple days of a ultralow carb diet you may feel a bit lethargic, and if you're new to training it's not going to be easy to push yourself when you are feeling crummy in general. You should feel normal soon. Ketones spare muscle tissue so there is no need to worry that your losing muscle. Try having a couple hundred milligrams of caffeine before the gym to help your central nervous system fire better and blunt muscle pain.

    Higher volume is not ideal on CNS at all trust me I did this and failed. Try SW or a low volume 5/3/1

    Understood, I was mostly curious about the reason behind this (I've experienced exactly what you described). I did find that Fartlek training is no problem at all. I felt amazing afterward. As a returning/beginner lifter, would Starting Strength be another option? I purchased the book on Kindle and found the explanations of technique extremely enlightening. I'm not sure I'm ready for 5/3/1; I've read overviews of the program and it seems a little advanced for me.

    Brilliant, thanks for the recommendation. I'm on day 7 now and starting to feel a lot better. Mind is clearer, body is lighter, things are good. I've never liked coffee but now that I can't drink lattes I'm finding good brewed coffee rather delicious.

    Starting Strength is another great routine to do while on CNS. Again just be careful with the accessory work.
