EMS218KeymasterHey Everyone, I have a question I am hoping to get some help with!I just bought some of ON Platinum Hydrowhey to try because it it hydrolized whey and has leucine in it already (I was previously doing whey isolate). I am a female and not that big (113#) so previously I was doing 1 scoop whey and 2gm leucine PWO. The ON Hydrowhey already has leucine in it but it doesn't tell how much-it just says about 9grams of a mix including leucine. I am doing 2/3 scoop of the protein because I aim for about 20gm protein PWO. Do you think that this is enough leucine PWO or should I supplement with pills as well??Also I am currently taking 2 scoops of amino energy pre workout (I workout at 5am). I know that this has BCAAs in it, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing any harm having that preworkout and then the hydrowhey post with the different BCAAs. I would like to find a flavored powdered preworkout caffeine ONLY supplement that is zero carb but I haven't had any luck so I want to make sure this current mix is okay:2 scoops ON Amino Energy Pre WO and 2/3 scoop Hydrowhey PWO.Any input??Thanks!!

Richard SchmittModeratorUse the Amino Acid, and I wouldn't buy again. taking BCAAs prior to training isn't all that ideal depending on goals, just have coffee with added caffeine for a Pre-Workout. The protein is fine. If you have an electronic scale, it'll help measure out the protein better, you need about 3-5g of Leucine PWO.

EMS218GuestThanks!I do measure the protein but I don't know how much leucine is in that blend to begin with so note sure if I need to supplement more.I can't do coffee before I work out. Hot coffee right before intense workouts does not mix well for me. 🙁Thanks for your help!

Richard SchmittModeratorI'm the same, I normally make some instant Folger's coffee, let it cool completely with the added caffeine and drink it on the way to the gym. Normally, I've been just adding 500mg caffeine in water, and drink that on the way to the gym as well.

MikehrMemberHonestly all protein has leucine in it lol Leucine is an amino acid.So I wouldn't worry about just take your protein and forget the leucine, the effect it will have 20g wont be much. Its much more important during some of the huge 400g of carbs 150g of protein backloads where you need all the insulin possible to put nutrients in the muscle.

This is true but Leucine on-top of that protein could be very beneficial PWO and with each backloading meal. If youve got the money do it. About 3-5 grams should suffice with each shake/meal PWO.

EMS218GuestThanks everyone! Yeah,I definitely want to supplement with some leucine PWO as I have read/listened to Kiefer say how important that is. I know he recommends 5g but I can't imagine a smaller female needs that much? I have been taking two grams. My pills are 500mg each and thats 4 pills…I cant imagine needing to take 10??The protein says: Nearly "9 Grams of Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine (BCAAs)" So I just wonder how much leucine that really is...if I need to supplement with the pills in addition to the protein?Does anyone know of a flavored supplement with ONLY caffeine? I like the amino energy because if I wake up hungry it at least puts something in my stomach and I know it sounds dumb but then I'm fine to train. I'd like to just have the caffeine but I don't really want to do pills. I'm just trying to decide if the platinum hydrowhey is really worth the cost or not. I wanted to try it but dont know if I will buy again. Thanks! 🙂

MikehrMemberI would stick to either ordering hydrowhey or pepto pro from true nutrition and yeah 3g of leucine is sufficient. As for the pre-workout you need to add something else to it to flavor it so you can't get a flavored caffeine product without any additives.Just buy caffeine powders, add lemon and stevia and your G2G

A powder would probably be cheaper and probably better digested. But either way try for 3 grams. Less than that doesnt fully stimulate the increase in protein synthesis we are looking for.

EMS218GuestOkay, thanks for all of the help!So if they protein already has leucine in it (but it doesn't say a total amount-it just says about 9gm of a mix) and I'm doing 2/3 a scoop then I'm thinking I need to maybe still be supplementing with 1gm additional of pills with my shake? That way I'm likely getting in the 3gms.Any additional thoughts?

Richard SchmittModeratorYou can be fine with what you're taking.

The rates of digestion will be different. You kind of want the 3-5 grams to "hit" you at the same time to maximise their effects. Thats why regardless of the leucine content of the food/powder you want at least 3 grams in one form total. You have to remember that leucine is not only an anabolic trigger but also a substrate the body will use for muscle growth/repair. More is better up to a certain point. I think Kiefer said upto 20grams in one meal as being the maximum optimal dosage. And I can tell you from others experience that less than 3-5 grams of the free amino acid on its own is not going to be worth your while.

+1 beat me to it and hit it right on the head!

EMS218GuestThanks Gl;itch.e! So would you recommend still taking 3gm of pills on top of what is already in the protein for my size (female around 113#)? I am thinking if thats the case it's probably not worth spending the extra money for this expensive protein if I am still supplementing with the leucine. I like the protein because its got 1carb and tastes good (I train in AM) but might start having carbs PWO anyway so maybe it doesn't matter too much.Always tweaking and experimenting to get to the next level! Thanks for you input.

I would if cost isnt an issue. Powdered Leucine should be cheaper. But maybe go with whats cheapest AND most preferable to you. If you want you could do a full scoop of the hydrowhey. If its 9grams of BCAAs you should be getting just over 3 grams of leucine. Hydrolysed whey will digest fast enough so that should give you the kick you need. Just dont be afraid of adding the extra 3g leucine on top of that and to each backloading meal as well if you can afford it. It will definately help.
