Swanson52GuestYou said you lift heavy 4 days a week on 5/3/1 and only once a week on Westside (you have two ME days a week on Westside). I interpreted this as you equating each 5/3/1 day as a ME day. I wouldn't call 5/3/1 heavy, at least not for the first several cycles. Actually if you are using 90% of your max like what Wendler suggests, you are actually using approximately the same level of intensity as DE day on Westside.
You hate 5/3/1. I've got it.

Don't get upset. I just don't think it's appropriate in this situation. I have 5/3/1 before myself.

thezukimanParticipantWell……didn't mean to open a can of worms; nonetheless, thanks for the input gents.Irie!-Z

Brandon D ChristParticipantHaha your welcome.

thezukimanParticipantI plan on competing in the 181 pound class soon. my numbers are about the same as yours and based on what I have seen by just googling powerlifting comps we would probably win the smaller competitions. What kind of routines do you like to follow? I have been trying to follow a version of westside conjugate as best as I can but my gym doesn't have bands and chains so im limited.
Sorry I missed your question jsmith, but if you can't already tell I am currently doing 5/3/1.-Z

thezukimanParticipantSo, Ibob due to your apparent seething hate for 5/3/1 do you have some hyperlinks or can you PM me some PDFs of programs you have used in the past with great success? There are a few different Westsides (Westside, Westside for skiny bastards, etc…) I also googled “Ed Coan” programs and all I could find was a bench program.Thanks.-Z
March 11, 2013 at 7:13 pm #157727
Brandon D ChristParticipantHaha when I said Ed Coan I meant any sort of linear periodization program.I can give you links later tonight because I do not have access to a computer right now.By the way I don't hate 5/3/1 I just dont think its appropriate for someone like yourself. I have recommended it to other people.

thezukimanParticipantOk great just shoot the links my way when u get a chance.Thanks.

Swanson52GuestAlright, kids, I'm here to eat a little crow (which may turn into a LOT, but we'll see). To recap-I've had decent success with 5/3/1 as well as WS4SB. I've dabbled in conjugate training, but I wholeheartedly believe that these "advanced" programming methods are really best used when monitored/administrated by an experienced coach. The reason I'm going to admit I'm a bit wrong; under the tutelage of an experienced coach, I've started block periodization, and I just started with the accumulation block. I do work hard in the gym and conditioning, but let me tell you this-if you think you're reaching the outer limits of yourself, try having a coach do your programming. I concede, here, that once you get to "that point", serving 5/3/1 is serving the wrong master.

Brandon D ChristParticipantI personally just think 5/3/1 doesn't allow the trainee to advance as quickly as he should. Here is the link for the ebook for the Cube Method: http://www.jtsstrength.com/articles/2012/12/05/the-cube-method/It isn't cheap as it is $40, but if you want just ask MikeHr to forward a message I wrote up for him breaking down the Cube Method. I'd send it myself, but my message box doesn't save sent messages for whatever reason. Info on Westside can pretty much be found by just googling, but here is a nice description of it written by....drum roll....Jim Wendler! http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/files/Westside%20Barbell%20Template.pdfHere is the Texas Method as described by Mark Rippetoe http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/the_texas_method tzanghi is a fan of this so hit him up if you have any questions on it.

TomahawkMemberI will input my advice even though everyone has already said it. Go ahead and do a meet. As someone who should have competed multiple times(and hasnt) I recommend it. Do it before you get into your own way too much.

i got that cube method, i like the program, i know strength is proportional with hypertrophy, how do you see your results? You tweak in any way? Would you recomend to some who trains MMA or is it just powerlifting?
March 12, 2013 at 12:55 pm #157733
Brandon D ChristParticipantI think it can be used for any strength training protocol. I don't do the program as is though. I run a Westside set up and I use some of the ideas from the Cube Method.

Ibob, I am supposing you have tried all of the aforementioned programs. In regards to the Texas Method did you do the Power Cleans or substitute something else in? I have never been a fan of Cleans as my wrists are quite "finicky" and tend to hurt to the point I have trouble with Benches and OH Presses after I do any type of Clean.Any advice? Maybe someone has had similiar wrist pain and knows a good remedy?
March 12, 2013 at 5:09 pm #157735
Brandon D ChristParticipantI never did the Texas Method, but some people like it, so I suggested it. Personally there isn't enough volume for me.
