FairyGuestEveryone is me. I am stating that its impossible to grow muscle being in a caloric deficit, and CNS. Getting stronger, I think if timed around the CN is possible. This depends of course on the amount of muscle you had before going on the diet. I stick to my guns.
If anyone wants to imply that I don't have very much muscle mass *ahem* ^^ 😉 As a 124 lb female, my latest DL PR (170 lbs) puts me at the same level as PShannon according to deadlifting standards 🙂http://www.exrx.net/Testing/WeightLifting/DeadliftStandards.htmlPShannon's Stats:Deadlift: 340 Jul 2012 (http://dangerouslyhardcore.com/forum/index.php?topic=3281.msg34524#msg34524)174 lbs on Dec 2012 (http://dangerouslyhardcore.com/forum/index.php?topic=5178.msg71978#msg71978)

When did I imply that you didn't have any muscle mass? Did I ever state that you didnt have muscle mass? Did I ever state that you haven't made great progress (I have commented on it in your log)? I said that its impossible to add muscle while eating in a caloric deficit and on CN. My deadlift max at 174 is 395.... http://dangerouslyhardcore.com/forum/index.php?topic=1920.225

Brandon D ChristParticipantYou can grow a lot on lower reps if you don't rest a lot, just saying. I made my best gains not working in that 6-12 range that is often talked about. I just didn't take a couple minutes of rest in between triples, doubles or singles. If you don't want too much hypertrophy, you keep the reps low AND the rest time long.
This is true. Actually the best way to put it is that if you are not getting a pump (which you usually don't when you are lifting really heavy) they you likely won't put on muscle.

FairyGuest@PShannon I'm afraid I don't have any idea if I'm eating at a caloric deficit or not because I don't count calories or macros, and even if I did I have no idea how many I'm burning each day.If anything, my weight has increased by a few pounds since starting CN, but, my measurements and photos show that I'm losing fat; and of course my PRs are UP.I'm planing to stick to CN for the next 3-6 months (however long it takes to get to 12%) and it will be interesting to see what new PRs I set while losing fat.@Ibo/SM Thanks! I will keep that in mind!

The thing is the body is going to want to stay at homeostasis and is going to want to adapt to whatever environment it is exposed to. The reason why I think it possible (but admittingly unlikely) to get more muscular on Carb Nite is the growth hormone release you get after exercise. In Carb Backloading we pretty much blunt growth hormone from exercise from raising insulin through the roof after (and in my case and many others during) exercise. This is good because insulin is way more anabolic than GH could ever hope to be. More muscle growth. In Carb Nite we do not get any insulin spikes, except for a quick one from a post workout shake of protein, hydrolyzed protein, and leucine. This quick spike will actually enhance GH release (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19251037), unlike spike after spike which destroys the GH release. GH, unlike insulin, will increase lipolysis (breakdown of fat for fuel) and increase protein synthesis at the same time, hence breaking down fat for fuel and building muscle at the same time. So this explains how you can build muscle without carbs. When we see people here who are losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time on Carb Nite, I think what happens is body fat fat is being broken down during lipolysis in addition to the fat being eaten from the diet.Is the person in a calorie deficit? Over what time frame? Day, week, hours? I don't know, I don't even think we would be able to determine that outside of a lab, excluding someone who is eating less than 1,000 calories a day.Just my explanation on how this could work. I guess I could be wrong.
