Compozed76MemberOk…Whey and MCT oil put together for a quick shake during the day…Does this cause insulin spikes? Should we avoid the simple whey shakes during the day to avoid them if this is true?

GnomerParticipanti wouldn't worry to much unless you are having 3+ shakes a day

T-Bone300MemberBelieve the recommendation was 10g isolate:10g MCT and you'll be ok. If you take multiple shakes then separate them by couple of hours. I personally don't have my first meal until about 13:00 so I like to have a shake first thing 08:00 then again at 11:00. For density bulking the ration are even higher so just jump in, measure then adjust.

Compozed76MemberOk…why does whey at 24grams of protein spike insulin levels, while a meal such as chicken breast doesn't? Also I thought it was the hydrolysates that spiked and not just whey alone.

Whey has more leucine in it than chicken breast, so at equal amounts, whey will raise insulin levels more. Further, Whey is generally taken in liquid form, which speeds up gastric emptying. Even further, Whey isolate is already broken down to some degree(hydrolysates even more so), and therefore requires less time for digestion. However, eating 25g of just chicken breast will raise insulin more than desirable because it's very low fat.Lastly, hydrolysates are a form of broken down protein(here whey). As to OP, it depends on the results you want. Whey is a great protein for anabolism, but you'll be raising insulin more than you should and thus will limit fat burning. Pick your desired result.

Compozed76MemberOk…so as a general rule…protein and fat go hand in hand. Does anyone recommend saving whey for when insulin should be high anyway? During backloads and post workout only?
