Jason BerriganParticipantI have afemale friend that is in the process of losing weight. She actually lost 67 lbs over the last 12 months eating as low fat as possible and doing as much cardio as possible. (She went from 255 down to 188 )Her macros look like this (60% carbs, 30% protein and 10% fat (mostly coming from avocados and olive oil ). Total 900 to 1000 cals daily. She has been doing the insanity dvds and jogging 3 miles everyday. Of course she's constantly losing weight(1 - 2 lbs a week) I know that going low fat and doing that much cardio will make you lose muscle and screw your metabolism, but since she's losing all this weight, she believes her way is the only way and the healthiest way. Now everyone around her wants to do what she's doing: Do as much cardio as possible and demonize fat. I tried to explain to her the best way I could that she needs to eat more and I showed her what ate and of course she's convinced that cns is unhealthy. What long term consequences could there be from losing weight this way and what articles you guys suggest I make her read?

i'd tell her to get a dexa scan or get dunked in a tank.... hypothetically if your 50% body fat and lose 60 pounds but your magically still 50% body fat, then you obviously aren't losing all body fat. obviously burning lean body tissue is something you absolutely want to avoid, as it lowers your metabolic rate.

TheBrianRothMemberPeople lose weight (and even fat) going low-cal and low-fat; especially if you start off morbidly obese. The problem comes when your body learns how to adjust to living off of so few calories and adjusts to having to punish itself daily doing crap-tons of cardio and suddenly, you plateau. Then, you have the same body fat you can't seem to get rid of no matter how much you run and no matter how low-fat you go. Your body is being starved to death by eating so few calories and your muscles are deteriorating. FACT: even the Insanity and P90X programs tell you not to go low-cal. They recommend eating 1800-2600 calories a day with usually a 40/40/20 Protein, Carb, Fat ratio. If you're doing crap tons of cardio and keeping your heart rate above 65%, you NEED those carbs to be able to keep up. But the real question is, WHY THE HELL would anyone want to do that to themselves? Work your ass off for an hour and a half of crazy, high-paced cardio; beating yourself to a pulp – for what? Decent results only to plateau later? And what's more, you could have spent half the time in the gym, done almost NO cardio whatsoever and lost MORE FAT without losing muscle if you had just fixed your diet! You'll never be able to tell someone "that won't work" while it's working. When she plateaus and gets frustrated and screams about how she's been running 3 hours a day and can't lose the last 30 lbs, buy her a copy of CNS and tell her "I told you so".Just my honest opinion.

thrivefulMemberThe issue is, although losing that weight may improve her health, unless she gets bloodwork done, it's impossible to say she is healthy. High carb, low fat tends to lead to a poor blood profile, low HDL, high triglycerides. If you fancy that, low fat high carb is fab

Jason BerriganParticipantShe keeps posting pics of her low fat meals on he Facebook and I asked here what aboutbthe fat. Your body needs it to burn fat. Her reply was: No i dont need it, look at all the progress I'm making without it. I finally gave up but it can be frustrating that she is looked upon as a guru and everybody is seeking her advice and wants to do exactly what she's doing and I'm seen as the weirdo who doesn't know what the hell he's doing eating all that bacon and pop tarts.

PhattyMemberLeave her to it? There's no convincing some people. My older brother is the same, he sees my results with what I've done with SKD/CNS and even CBL in the past and he still thinks low-fat diet (chicken/brown rice/potatoes/broccoli) is the way to go. I just leave him to it. The proof is in the pudding, he can't stick to chicken and rice for more than a week despite thinking it's so good, whereas I can eat steak and eggs every day of the year at this point without flinching. Even my Mum who's had a gastric sleeve operation and lives on fucking rice cakes is dubious of what my diet consists of.
