hi all,i have an insatiable thirst to learn. i've combed through every thread here in the Science forum and have probed through several other boards on these forums, as well as several articles online. but as a business graduate, a lot of the science is lost on me. i want to change that. i want to start teaching myself new subjects.i'm not really sure if i should start with thermodynamics, biomechanics/biophysics/biochemistry, general nutrition, or what.  there may not even be a way to answer this question. there may not be one true logical 'starting point' at all. perhaps it's just 'general nutrition' but i guess i'm skeptical about the quality of information i would find. i just want to learn more, and i am wondering if anyone can suggest a good starting point. will also take recommendations for a book as an intro/starting pointthanks for dealing with my rant.

good stuff.  i did see Lustig's "bitter truth" video and loved it! i wish i had understood his expansion into how the body processes ethanol vs. fructose vs. glucose better, though. would "fat chance" give me that type of intro, or would it be more along the line of the video?

i updated my previous post with more suggestions.. he does go pretty in depth in the book on how the body processes different nutrients and what they do to the body when over-consumed..

much appreciated. please feel free to keep 'em coming with anything you come across. i've got a lot of free time now that i'm just working (as opposed to working + classes) and i generally just use it to read more. i always get to the bottom line in anything i read, but it would be nice to understand some of the meat of the articles i read!thanks again, and as always, open to more suggestions whenever

Just realise that “nutrition” is an abstract field with much theorising and very little concrete facts. One persons gospel is anothers heresy!

Another really good book on the history of how much of the current accepted “knowledge” came to be this way is detailed in Gary Taubes book, “Good Calories, Bad Calories”.His follow on book "Why We Get Fat" is a good if very basic book.

No offense to Gary but I dont think I want to read a whole book just to hear about how evil insulin is. People who focus on insulin for fatloss are missing the forest for the trees IMO.

+1When I realized this I was quite disappointed.. I couldn't believe how much no one really knew about anything! Or how much everyone thought they knew about something... Really left me bewildered at first. "What do I believe?!" Actually forced me to make my own decisions about what I put into my body instead of letting society tell me... I completely agree. That is why I characterized the book as "very basic". He only tells of the bad things about insulin but you and I know there are some REALLY good things that can be done with insulin (CBL) thanks to guys like Kiefer.I do think that for the general public, who IMHO, is completely unaware of anything nutritional (90%?) other than the long perpetrated myths, he sheds some great light in and easy read and hopefully helps folks get interested.

And this is a much healthier way to approach it IMO. Diets often turn people into neurotic stress balls incapable of enjoying the foods they eat.

I know I wasn't the one to request these book suggestions, but thank you SanosukeX! Turns out my little library just north of us actually has both Wheat Belly AND Fat Chance. So I will be picking them up tomorrow when I'm out and about for some evening reading.
