Hey Guys,So here is my story. I did CBL for about a month and loved most of it. I like being to eat good without guilt at night after a heavy lifting session. However, about three weeks in to the diet I began to have serious stomach pain every night after a backload. I literally could not sleep every night because the pain was so severe. I thought it might be gluten related so I would eliminate it from the diet and still the pain would continue. My bowl movements were pathetic too (I know TMI)...I went to Vitamin Shoppe and talked to the manager of the store and described the type of diet I was doing and he guess "oh your doing carb backloading". He told me that I wasn't the first guy that had come with the same symptoms from the diet. He told me that while the diet works pain free for some people that the reintroduction carbs in mass in the evening after a carb fast has had ill effects with certain people and their digestive systems and caused serious stomach pain even when they eliminate gluten. To me honest, I was both pissed and relieved to hear that. Pissed because I may have to change or drop the diet and relieved to know Im not a freak. Im not real sure what else to do but I realize that when I go ultra low carb all day and then drill it at night, the pain comes with it. Even probiotics and lots of fiber didn't help...Anyway, since then I have modified the diet for my tummy. I realize that to the Die Hard CBL person I have committed the unpardonable sin but I wanted to get your guys feed back on my plan. The only real difference is that I am eating slightly more carbs that 30 in the day time and am keeping them low glycemic. I have found that my bowls are much better and the pain is gone when I introduce a small portion of carbs earlier in the day, then when I backload, I can eat whatever and I don't have andy problems. I am generally not eating as much carbs as before because I realize I am eating more than 30 carbs during the day...Wake up 6:30am: coffee and coconut oil10Am: 10 Grams of Whey12 pm: 2-3 slices of Bacon, 3 Eggs, 2 Slices of Whole Wheat Toast (30 Carbs)3pm: 10 Grams of Whey4:30 Workout5:45: PWO Shake6:30-10PM: Carb BackLoad (But I am not drilling as much food- Maybe 250 Carbs total)Basically I am wanting to know if this is a recipe for getting fat or if this is possible to make gains even if they are slower...

Try adding in Magnesium citrate (Natural calm)Also, it could be other food intolerance's, what was your average backload?

Yes it is a recipe for getting fat. No wheat or carbs during the ULC part of the day! No wheat in general! Take out the whey during the day just PWO.

I totally missed the whole wheat.Honestly, gluten is pretty damaging to gut lining so even if you seem to handle gluten okay having really high gluten containing foods isn't a good way to help gut issues. Also, fiber isn't that important. Just eat a lot of fat and slowly reduce your fiber load.

Seriously I wouldn't take advice from the manager at the vitamin shoppe.  How many carbs were you backloading with?  What kind of carbs?  Your diet looks fine except for your wheat toast, which is completely pointless.  If you want fiber, eat a handful of nuts and eat vegetables.  When you backload, eat potatos or sweet potatos.  You also will likely need more than 250 carbs. Also I concur with BigTex, ditch the morning whey.

Hey guys, thanks for the replaysYeah, I wasn't doing whole wheat when I was doing CBL at all. I never ate any low glycemic carbs except veggies. My basic CBL consisted of 300g of white rice,  1 white potatoes, and 1-2 bowls of ice-cream. I ate this along with my protein sources.I realize the manager at Vitamin Shoppe could be giving me bad advice and I considered that. However, after a week and a half of no sleep and continual groanings from pain in the abdomen, I was willing to listen to anyone that could help. That is when I started introducing some carbs (no more than 50) during the day and in doing so, my stomach problems went away. The vitamin shoppe guy might have given me a recipe to be a fatty but at the moment it was a good trade off because I felt so bad. Whereas before I was eating 500-600 carbs a night I have curtailed that to about 250 a night because I am eating 30-50g of carbs in the day instead of 0-30. I havent noticed any negative affects on my body. The good news is I can sleep now. However, I don't want to set my self up for failure as I go forward either. My current backloads are about 150g white rice, and a large bowl of ice cream. I can totally ditch the whole wheat bread... Thats fine, Ill eat a gluten free source. The question is mainly over the introducing of more than 30 carbs during the day. That seems to be relieving the stomach problems at night. My body just doesn't seem to be responding well to fasting all day (0-30 carbs) and then drilling it at night (600g). Will eating 50g of carbs in the day blow me up like a fatty... if so then, then I may just be out of luck on this diet 🙁 Any other thoughts? Thanks guys

I think you'd be much better off to ramp up your backload levels rather then eat more carbs during the day.If I do something like CNS for awhile and then go back to CBL I can't handle as many carbs right a way, I have to build up over a few weeks.

Honestly you were probably just eating too much.  Plus white rice and potatos are very filling.  Eat less clean food and more junk.  The carbs go down easier that way.  You don't have to eat until you are in pain, just eat until you are satisfied.  A lot of my backloads are 350-400 grams.

Are you certain it is related to the back load, could it be your PWO? Creatine or some whey protein (of poor quality) have been known to create issues in the stomach.

+1 When I first started backloading a few weeks ago I was trying to slam 450-500g right away and I just got way too bloating and full and felt like shit. I cut down to around 300g and starting introducing a little more each week to see what I could handle and it seems to be working much better. Just start slow and build your way up

    Try adding in Magnesium citrate

Wouldn't recommend this on an empty stomach if you're anywhere that does have a bathroom within 10ft
