Just my $.02, but I posted multiple times online this year regarding my goals and issues when trying to get “shredded”. As often suggested here, CN is the way to go if fatloss is truly your goal. However, I was unable to add much muscle at all while doing so. Being an ectomorph/meso mix (emphasis on ecto) who trains solely for cosmetic/aesthetic purposes, I have found it very difficult to gain any appreciable size in the "off months" that I was able to spare when I leaned out in the summer months. I basically have an MMA type build and I'm ok with not being huge. I seem to have a natural set point that I naturally gravitate to when I lean out and I've unfortunately not been able to increase that over the years. Unfortunately, being a bit older and training natural doesn't lend itself to big muscle gains during my off-season. I've attempted to do CBL over this period each year, but personally I always inevitably put on fat along with any muscle (although I do think CBL minimizes it as much as feasibly possible). The bottom line in my mind is the age old truth that you have to be in a calorie surplus to gain which predisposes you to some fat gain and you have to be in calorie deficit to lose fat. If your goal is both, SA is the closest thing to a good middle ground that I've found, but as a natural trainer the "gains" on both sides (fat & muscle) can be very slow. All in all, I'm not sure if it's better to DB and trim off later or use SA the whole way. As with many things, it will be based on your personal experimentation.
