Brandon D ChristParticipantFound a study in Pubmed that showed that testosterone increases in men after a small amount of alcohol. The alcohol does was .5 g/kg which is about 1 drink for every 60 lbs of bodyweight.Doesn't look like it is in a Peer reviewed Journal, but it is University research, however it kind of makes you feel less guilty after having a few beers!http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12711931

For alcohol to significantly lower testosterone, you need to do some serious drinking. ~120 g alcohol, the equivalent of 10 beers, will lower testosterone by 23% for up to 16 hours after the drinking binge. If you drink so goddamn much that you are admitted to the hospital, you get a similar effect with a reduction of about -20%.
A few studies have looked at alcohol consumption in the post-workout period. One study examined the hormonal response to post-workout alcohol consumption using 70-80 g alcohol, equivalent to 6-7 beers. Talk about "optimizing" nutrient timing. Anyway, despite this hefty post-workout drinking binge, no effect on testosterone was found and only a very modest effect on cortisol was noted.

I saw the latter study you quoted before. Personally I don't think alcohol is really a huge issue unless you get plastered every weekend. I don't really care for drinking heavily anyway.

+1 on this. It's when thing if you are spending your whole weekend totally shit faced every single weekend, but I think one of the best things about CBL is to be able to have a life and and be able to get leaner or stay lean depending on how crazy you go. Spending to much time worrying about when and how to drink with CBL just defeats the simplicity of it all.

Yea I would say go ULC a couple days, unless you are stuggling with the diet. IF you are struggling I would do a whole prep phase. Honestly, just drink whatever. If are drinking a shitload, it isn't gonna matter if you had 200 g of sugar or carbs.

steverMemberin the podcast w/ Max Aita, Kiefer talks about test suppression occurring for a few days following a night on the town. any link to the source on this?Cobb, Gavaler & Vanthiel found that, "ethanol at levels at or below those generally accepted as defining legal intoxication inhibits testosterone production and secretion [in the testes]. Whether the toxic effect of ethanol is due its conversion to acetaldehyde or a change in the testicular redox state remains to be determined."this was an animal experiment, though, and conducted 30 years ago

I've heard him say that. I wish I able to read the entire studies to get a better idea.

Brandon D ChristParticipantHere is a very good study that was conducted recently: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3258349/ It used young females, young males, older females, and older males. Each was given alcohol until they reached 50 mg% on the breathalyzer. The testosterone levels on the younger males went down about 9%. Every other group (including the older males) had an increase in testosterone. The IGF levels of the younger males went down to. This was interesting because I intuitively thought older males would suffer more with respect to testosterone levels than younger males, when in fact it is the opposite.Does anybody know the conversion of 50 mg% BrAC to BAC? I can not figure that out!

benwils911ParticipantIf it's an actual breathalyzer/Intoxilyzer, like the one's used by the police, and it was used/maintained properly, then the reading obtained is considered to be BAC. The instrument does the conversion.

Maybe it's .05 BAC? I don't understand what "mg%" means.
October 12, 2012 at 11:31 pm #86665
benwils911Participant50 mg% means 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood and that equals a reading of .05.

Justin GuimondParticipantI've been trying to find more studies that Kiefer might be referencing, here's a link with a good array of sources that talks about the relationship between testosterone and alcohol: http://correct-weight-loss.net/2009/09/29/alcohols-effect-on-testosterone-and-how-it-affects-muscle-building-and-fat-loss/

Justin GuimondParticipantSupposedly the guy who posted at that link even has a 250 page e-book about the topic… but I'm not going to delve into his studies-referenced and e-book right now.
May 27, 2013 at 8:48 pm #86668
Brandon D ChristParticipantThat ought to be an interesting read.
