darienmdMemberFirst off, I hate the smith machine. A couple of the routines laid out in Shockwave say to use it (close grip bench & military press). Is there any benefit to using it over just the barbell? I would much rather use a rack with a bar.

Richard SchmittModeratorPersonally I don't use the Smith Machine at all with SW. Just the barbell, dumbbells, and cables/machines.

pshannonMemberWhy do you hate the smith machine? Let me throw a little article at you from someone that is stronger than you.http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/why_i_love_the_smith_machinemaybe you should hate something worth hating, like cats or getting caught in the rain.

well first off, that article goes on a lot of 'if' scenarios. "if you dont want to work stabilizers" or "if you have an injury", none of which are the case for me. So, for me, a free-bar rack is more beneficial/enjoyable, but thank you for the article.secondly, i hate cats more than almost anything on this planet.

There are a lot of "if" scenarios in life. What IF i read to the end of the article? What IF I stopped hating cats (who would ever do that)?Lets share what i think is the most important part of the article...."I don't expect anyone to scrap the basic lifts from their routine in favor of the Smith machine exercises, nor do I think that's necessary or even ideal. The Smith machine is simply a tool, and in the right context, a very effective one."There are many practical ways to use the smith machine and not look like a tard. 1. After a really heavy set of Flat DB press or Incline DB press, going over to the smith machine loading it up with a weight and just banging out some Decline bench, and not worrying about dropping the weight on your head. 2. Squating in it lower than you can with a bar without having to think about bailing out or getting stuck in the hole. Of course this after Leg curls + Leg Press + RDLs. Cats are always plotting.....hate them

haha i did read the whole article. i guess i should have added another reason i have a sincere distaste for the smith is because i go to l.a. fitness, unfortunately. and that means that at any given time there are a dozen clowns surrounding each of the three smith machines talking about their fucking date-raping escapades and frat parties and then doing a set of 500 "lean-beack" squats with 100lbs. i'm frustrated. also, i like doing a lot of assistance work in my 5/3/1 program (when i go back to that) and I just much prefer the feel of a free bar.

pshannonMemberSee you don't hate the smith machine….you hate the “bros”, which I think we all do.Embrace the smith machine. Do a set of 25 for Incline press...then flick off the "bros"BUT if I ever hear about you doing up-right rows in the smith machine....you don't even want to know.

+1The Smith has its uses, but they should not involve bent-rows. LOL.The fucking "brahs"... they definitely won't be using the smith for Squats... they never train legs.Cory

guitarslinger16ParticipantI hate the smith machine too. But in my gym they dont have a free bench for bench press. A huge liability i guess. To many stupid kids probably got hurt. I even told the person running my box gym i would sign a waiver but anyway. Is it ok to use db for the smith machine workouts and for benching. Also can someone explain the incline iso hammer press. I couldnt find a video. Thank you

This is immediately what came to my mind.I finally got the opportunlty to do Smith machine bent over rows and it was arguably one of the best back movements I've ever done. I hate that I'm saying this: I can't wait to get back to a gym that has a Smith machine.
