thezukimanParticipantAnybody else ever tried these:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXNlrHOXw2sMy quad sweep isn't where i want it to be and it doesn't help that Vastus medialis is honestly one of my best growing muscles and is rather large (people always ask me what the lump is when wearing shorts and they usually think I have two knees lol...not tooting the own horn here just stating facts)Anyways I can always feel my VMO working when doing feet elevated squats, low on the platform leg press, etc...but could never feel my outer quad (Vastus lateralis) working no matter the exercise.I tried these somersult squats w/ just 115lbs. and boom I got some buring for once in my outer quad. Just thought I would share. If anyone else has tried these let me hear about the experience.-Z

I tried them last week and plan to start adding them in every few weeks as my quad exercise.I really felt the burn in my vastalus lateralus (outer quad - sweep) and I have never felt that area burn in a workout before. You don't have to use much weight either. I also used 25lb plates for my heels. It takes some adjusting to get the angle just right, especially w/ a slightly angled smith machine.Give em' a try.-Z

Are Olympic squats symply high bar squats with feet shoulder width apart?I vary my stance and bar position. When going for max weights (powerlifting) I do halfway between shoulder width and extra wide w/ my feet & have the bar low. For hitting quads hard I do shoulder width high bar work and for hitting inner thighs I do extra wide squats w/ the bar low.Let me know what you think of the somersaults! 😉-Z

Yes shoulder width and high bar is olympic, and I pretty much stick to just out side of shoulder width and high bar, its the most comfortable for me!

I feel high bar a lot in the vastalus medius...but not in the lateralus very much. It might be due to the fact that I have longer legs and a long upper torso. My knees end up tracking a good bit in front of my toes, so a lot of stress is placed on the tear drop. I go lighter on these b/c when I go narrow I end up looking a lot like the pics of Arnold squatting (that is if I do not stretch the heck outta my ankles).lol.-Z

Fair enough I am the opposite of you development wise, my sweep and middle quad are well developed and my tear drop is lagging hence my squat style. The way that allows you to lift the most weight the most comfortably will be your best bet 🙂

I agree; however even though my tear drop is clearly much more prominent I am weaker at Olympic squats than low bar PL squats.lol. So, one set of muscles is smaller but stronger whilst the other is bigger and weaker.....I do train for PL, so that makes a difference. When I do PL squats it feels like each muscle is getting fairly equally loaded quad wise, but much more so in the posterior chain.-Z

Did you add a lot to your squat doing Smolov?

MikehrMemberWell I just started it for back squat, but I added 40lbs to my front squat last month 🙂 Partly due to the program but also due to LJ helping fix my form

That's great progress! So, I am rather unfamiliar w/ Smolov...I just have read it's suposed to help put more weight on your squat. Is it a program more for the novice or advanced? Also, is it just good for increasing squat weight? I am just curious b/c I am currently running Westside and I like to change it up after about 12 weeks on the same power lifting routine. Often I do bodybuiding workouts for a month to give me a break. Might look into this tho.Thanks.-Z

Yeah well its a really simple program but Id say its for advanced because of the volume it involves, squatting 4 days a week is rough if your recovery and eating isn't up to par. http://joshmahony.com/weights/smolov_jr_old.php I would add 10lbs a week.
