Hi, I recently just completed my prep phase to wipe out all of my glycogen stores and to deplete my body to get it into a state of Ketosis (burning fat for energy instead of carbs) I cut my prep phase short, to 7 days as I incorporated HIIT intervals in 4 of the 7 days and weight trained throughout the 7 days. I am also incorporating Intermittent fasting, so I train fasted to further accelerate my fatloss. My eating window is typically from 5pm-12pm, workout between 4pm-5pm. I lost about 5lbs from the prep phase and on 8th day which was yesterday I worked out fasted then reintroduced the high GI Carbs. This morning I woke up heavier which I’m assuming went into my muscle cells after being depleted for so long.

Throughout my 7 day prep phase i’ve been using Keto sticks to determine whether or not I am in a state of ketosis, from the 4th-8th day (before backload) I was urinating Ketones as the strip had turned a darker colour. However when I woke up today after my first backload yesterday the strip was negative, I am a little confused now at why I am no longer in a state of ketosis only after my first backload. Please HELP.

Don’t aim to be in ketosis as it is not necessary for CBL to be successful. I suggest you follow the diet as it says in the book and see from there 🙂

    Thanks for the response.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the whole point of the prep phase was to prime the body for using fat for energy during the first half of the day (pre workout) and to be in ketosis during the first half. And the second half (post workout) is obviously to build muscle.

I was a little discouraged when I keto strip was negative as I thought I carb loaded too much last night.

If it is not necessary to be in ketosis for CBL then how would the body burn fat in the first half of the day?

Keto just isn’t necessary for fat loss – your body running on fat doesn’t mean all the fat on your body, it means dietary fat (the one you eat) so I’d say CBL takes advantage of hormones and the body’s ability to burn fat during the day but I suggest just checking this out: http://one.body.io/forums/topic/ketosis-and-carb-backloading/page/1/ .
Kiefer and many others discourage the use of Keto stix as they are not accurate. I hope one of the more experienced participants or mods can confirm what I am saying/help you out more.

Originally the prep phase was for ketogenesis, but after a couple years of experimenting, Kiefer found most people on CBL are rarely in a state of ketogenesis. Kiefer never really said much about the CBL prep phase, but I personally think it’s unnecessary.

Like what barca_fanboy said, kept isn’t necessary. Also I wouldn’t recommend IF unless you are really focused on fat loss and don’t care about muscle growth.

Oh ok, thats good to know. Obviously by introducing carbs back in your body will eliminate the state of ketosis I was in during the prep phase.

I am actually focusing more on fatloss than muscle building at the moment which is why im incorporating Intermittent fasting for the first half of my day, working out fasted then carbing up afterwards. I’ve been at it for 2 days now and I’m noticing a huge weight increase in the past 2 days about 5lbs (the weight I lost during the prep phase) I feel like I pretty much look the same, not leaner at all. Could I be doing something wrong?

I would consider CNS if fat loss is your main priority

Weight fluctuation is completely normal. Also you can’t expect to magically lose fat in two days. Don’t worry about it and just keep going for a while.
