FairyKeymasterOkay, I know this sounds crazy, but I'm trying to make my workout more 'functional'. For me, dead lifting represents picking up furniture. Like a piano... Or a rock. So my question for the lifting nerds is, would supernating my grip with both hands pose any danger? What effects might it have?

mwachtelParticipantYou could do it, but if you were going to you'd have to make sure your biceps are slacked, and have no tension. One techinque for that is to flex your triceps during the lift. I also feel like you dont have to supinate your grip to have something like deadlift transfer into "functional" training...

thestiffmeisterParticipantenI also wouldn't venture that way, if only for the risk of putting too much stress on your elbows, and because it will limit the weight you can lift, thus limiting strgth gains. There is a good reason we don't deadlift a couple inches away from our shins, too 😉Progression is key in any lift, adding difficulty for the sake of difficulty won't make your strength any more functional.

FairyGuestOkay… It's just that I can DL more than my body weight but I STILL struggle with moving furniture. WTF? :/

pshannonMemberThis is just asking for elbow pain and possible torn bicep. I think your best bet would be maybe1.) heavy ass tire flips2.) getting a job at a moving company3.) get a job at ikea4.) go pick up rocks at your local park 5.) landscaping job Picking up a bar is very advantageous because your grip can be perfect each time, and you can engage the right muscles.

Farmers walk? Probably one of the better carrier over liftts for life, especially is grip is an issue. Also, Jim laird talked about it for shoulder stability/health.

In all seriousness Tire flips - I know a girl that can do over 500lb tire flip and can DL well over 2x her BW. I'm sure she can move furniture. Farmers walks

That would be awesome. Right now I just use heavy dumbbells, 90-110lbs depending on the day, but I'd love to get some handles.

Sadly, no trap bar. My gym doesn't have anything, I'm just lucky they even have one squat rack.Deadlift is 355.
