omar57ParticipantJust wanted to know what people's thoughts were on always eating junk food for the back loading. I just bought the book but i have been doing the diet for almost 3 months now and the results are awesome. I'm basically doing density bulking, every week I have been getting stronger and improving, and friends and family say I am looking leaner. I first read about CBL in FLEX's February magazine I believe. Anyways do you guys eat crap everyday or do you keep it clean, by clean I mean white rice, cereal, white bread stuff like that rather than donuts, cookies, pizza. I eat that stuff too but just not everyday, I guess I still give myself a “cheat” day say on Saturday and eat the bad crap carbs rather than the bad good carbs

russellGuestI mix it up, but if I eat complex or low GI carbs then I make sure to eat them earlier in the evening rather than close to bed. Kiefer states in an interview that some people are afraid of simple and high GI carbs and they end up not getting the benefits of CBL because their blood sugar levels are sustained through the morning when they should be burning fat.I eat rice, potatoes, veggies, chocolate, brownies, chips, fries, turnovers, all kinds of pastries, ice cream, etc

Richard SchmittModeratorIf you want an example, look at my log from my Carb Nite yesterday. I ate nothing but clean carbs. Though I had some chocolate chips and gluten-free cookies (love chocolate and mint and cookies), it was still mostly clean.

Nicholas E bucciParticipantOk, this is getting confusing. Maybe, Im alone on this, but the main reason I wanted to try CBL was because of the junk food. My buddy, did a ridiculous 10 week diet, lost 30lbs, gained 10lbs of lean muscle and dropped his bodyfat% by 11%! (bod pod results from before and after to prove it). I call it ridiculous because his eating habits were absurdly strict. He had to premake every meal (took him 6hrs a week on sundays), and eat at precise times of the day, and he also had to train 6 days a week. Thing is, he was allowed one crappy meal a week, which was normally pizza or sometimes we'd go to a local Hotdog place (called Dirty Franks, look it up if your ever in Columbus, OH) and down a bunch of dogs. Thing is he got awsome results, but those 10 weeks sucked. What I'm getting at from reading these posts (and several others) is NOT to eat pizza, grilled subs, chipotle even, all the time. Only once, maybe twice a week. I guess what I'm saying is, what's the difference between his diet and doing CBL while eating white rice and low fat ice cream? He still got to eat carbs during the day (mainly brown rice, which I actually prefer over white) and still pigged out once a week. It's just confusing, because the more I read on here the less it seems to relate to the book directly and the more strict CBL seems…

julialadewskiMemberI disagree. CBL is not strict. I can make gains while back loading nearly every night. Sucks that you're friend had to be sooooo strict like that. I wonder what happens when he gets off the diet?? With CBL its so easy to AT LEAST maintain where you're at leanness wise… And still make synth and mass gains.Personally, I don't like eating carbs during the day. I feel like crap, I get bloated, I get sluggish, so it works for me to still eat carbs at night... I can get strong and lean without being strict. And I think the strict one to two backloads a week are people who are really trying to tighten up. My husband backloads 4-5 nights a week and is still getting leaner. Some people like to eat cleaner for whatever reason.... They feel better, maybe they are gluten free.... The whole point is that you can eat junk...

I'm really going to have to disagree with the last line of Julia's post here. Will you see results eating junk food? Judging from Julia's and several other people's experiences, yes you definitely will. Is it optimal from a health perspective? I really don't see how anybody can claim or think so. Crap is crap for other reasons besides it spiking your insulin levels (the main mechanism at play here if I understand it correctly). Despite the fact that doing so at right time is going to help you pack on muscle while losing fat doesn't change the fact that you're getting a lot of things along with the crap which won't be good for your gut or your body in general. I really wish Kiefer would do a post talking about how eating junk food (by which I mean processed carbohydrates) is a sufficient but not necessary part of CBL.In terms of results as far as lean muscle mass and body fat loss go, I really question whether or not you even have to eat junk food on CBL to see the best results possible from the program. At first I was really worried about this, but after losing 6% bodyfat since the middle of March while gaining strength and eating really no carbohydrates other than yams for my backloads, I would say you definitely don't have to eat dirty to see results either. As a sidenote, though, in terms of my strength gains I'm a pretty new lifter so there's definitely a huge novice effect going on with that, but I've actually gained weight while losing all that bodyfat on CBL, and I would think that has to be entirely due to the program.-Adam

sckielyParticipantOkay, what people seem to be missing here is that food becomes something completely different when it enters your mouth. It is no longer a burger and fries, your body doesn't care. It just becomes the macronutrients it contains! There is a lot of talk about "junk" Kiefer is very specific about not being the fat kid, so don't eat takeout constantly, make your own treats and make choices based on your goals. But basically food is just a mixture of various nutrients that if manipulated can have a drug like effect on your body. What we are doing with CBL is manipulating how hormones respond and how much of a response we get from different foods. Junk or clean it doesn't matter. Sure processed foods have other things you may want to avoid so make it yourself instead! As Julia said, you do not have to over think this method of eating, just structure your day according to the appropriate response. Keep carbs till after a workout or before a morning oneAnd Don't eat them through the day? Simple.

While CBL definitely doesn't have to (and shouldn't be complicated), the above statement isn't true at all. By that logic, a bottle of neurotoxin would be okay to drink since it's pure protein.

CaseyDMemberShe never said CBL makes it so you can eat only junk. It does however, make it so you can eat junk much more often and not see the typical negative results.

Jonathan CockertonParticipantI'd like to see everyone on this board back-load for a few years or longer, and see what type of health they are in in regards to backloading with crap food most of the time, get full panel blood tests and all that. Not knocking this way of eating at all, actually starting it very soon! With that said, I do look forward to back loading with cherry turnovers and ice cream lol =) But mainly I will stick to white rice, potatoes, corn. And I do have a Vitamix blender so although it is against the rules, I will be making a green veggie protein shake nightly. =)

This was pretty much what I was trying to say.

julialadewskiMemberthat's exactly what i was saying too!!!!! if you ARE concerned about eating “clean” then it works well if you choose the right clean foods. but remember, we're a different breed here. the typical American who wants to lose fat and gain muscle and wants to eat junk and not feel deprived.... it still works.that's all i was saying. but yes, you can eat cleaner choices and still get results.

Variety is a very good approach to CBL. The "junk food" is good for mental satisfaction (especially if you come from fat-kid-ness like Kiefer) and the "health food" tends to be cleaner, make you feel better overall. No one says you HAVE to eat junk or that you HAVE to keep it clean when it comes to CBL.Keep in mind, CBL and Carb Nite are tools that play with certain aspects of foods in order to accomplish a goal. You may need to eat "junk food" to gain a certain amount of muscle in a short time, but then you may like to switch to lower-glycemic, "healthy" foods for back-loading when you've reached your mass gaining goal.(I put those words in quotes because no way in hell am I going to get into a discussion of what's "healthy". Guh!)I have a Vitamix and I love to blend veggies into my shakes. So there!
