jlbpaMemberI've been using 2 cups of welch's grape juice for my PWO shake. I know it contains glucose and fructose but I'm not sure of the ratio GI index. Any thoughts?

Sam Alfred FrauliniParticipantI am not sure about the GI Index, but grape juice as a PWO drink is something I would never think of. remember that the fructose is going straight to your liver, and sucrose is half glucose, half fructose. So 10 grams of sucrose = 5g glucose, 5g fructoseSo you're sending lots of fructose to the liver, which will rebuild glycogen til the stores are topped off. Then it goes straight to fat storage.Only about 50% of the "sugar" you consume with this will be used by your muscles for anabolic processes. While the rest is sent to the liver for (hopefully) glycogen storage. So in my opinion this is not a great PWO drink. There are definitely better options out there; I would go to dextrose powder for a cheap PWO carb source.

The content of sugar in general for 2 cups of grape juice isn't too high, i would guess around 30-35g carbs per cup total, so even though 30g of fructose (2 cups combined) wouldn't be that big of an issue, i think a PWO shake, in most cases should contain a larger amount of carbs preferably from dextrose or maltodextrin. Are you mixing this with protein? Just asking because that would taste funny to me.Cheers!

markccjGuest2-3 bananas would be better. 10-15g fructose to replenish liver glycogen, shifting you to a state conducive to anabolism and ~45g fast absorbing CHO for muscle glycogen replenishment.

jlbpaMemberThat's what I figured. Thanks guys. It's just something I used in the past. I'm assuming we're mixing the dextrose powder with water. Is that right? Yes I have always mixed protein in. Never had a problem with the taste. I'm weird that way.

LOL hey whatever works, more power to ya. Dextrose with protein for me 🙂 sweetens it up a tad
