TheRevKeymasterI own and operate a residential cleaning company, meaning no access to any cooking equipment. For years I've relied on whey isolate shakes for my on-the-go work schedule. This includes during the prep phase. The CBL book never mentioned staying away from isolate, but I've been hearing about its insulin spiking properties. Was taking isolate a mistake?

f_montgomeryMemberThe impression that I get is that whey, due to its tendency to spike insulin, is not ideal during any of the ultra low carb portions of the diet. That being said, I did read a post from Naomi stating that if you add heavy whipping cream, or another fat source, to the whey, in order to achieve a 1:1 ratio of grams of fat to grams of protein (ex. 20g protein from whey, 20g fat), that you are in the clear.I'm new here and I'm sure more experienced members can tell you more, but I thought I'd offer what I've picked up in my reading. Good luck!

Fat blunts insulin spiking, not just with CBL or CNS, but in general. I use whey isolate during the "Keto" hours of the diet, as well. One of my shakes is 1 1/2 scoops whey isolate w/ 3/4 tbsp heavy whipping cream + 2 oz. cheddar cheese. I consume that in the late afternoon, while at work (it is very convenient).Coconut oil would work just fine, as well.Cory

MJCMemberI also did the whey shakes during the prep and mine were 50 grams whey with 1-2 tbls of mac nut oil. It seemed to work fine for me before, but I would like an answer on this as well… I base most of my meals off Dave Palumbo's diets.

Makes sense, as Palumbo is a big proponent of Keto dieting, and both CNS and CBL run Keto days or portion of days.Like I had said, just above, the fat blunts insulin-spiking. This is why you were able to intake the whey shakes w/o insulin issues shutting down "Keto".Cory

Well your prep phase was actually not a prep phase because you were spiking your insulin every day with the 50g if whey EVEN with the mac nut oil. Probably do it again. Kiefer stated that if your just going to do shakes all day you might as well not do this diet. Sorry guys.

+1Shakes shouldn't be the basis of your diet (any diet). Try to get mostly whole foods.Cory

MJCMemberthanks guys… Im in the single didget bodyfat range so it probably didnt matter for me… I did the prep phase before the book came out and then switched to whole foods. I would prefer to use more shakes just for convenience though which is why I asked.

MJCMemberoh and I wasnt doing “shakes all day” I was alternating shakes and food as Dave Palumbo suggests. I heard Kiefer on Daves Radio show last year which was when I started doing a mix of the diets. For the record it worked just as well for me as eating only solid food during the day.

Thats nice, its still not going to work for the majority of the people that are not single digits so its not correct advise to put out on the forum to confuse. Sorry

To be clear, you're talking about 50g of whey not working, right? 10g on it's own is fine. And, 12 to 20g is probably fine if balanced by HWC, coconut oil, or MCT?

12-20 is NOT fine with any type of fat source.

MJCMemberright… I switched to whole foods when the book came out so basically I screwed up the prep phase, but it didnt matter since I was single didget bodyfat… and the Palumbo diet, with carbs added at night post workout while skipping breakfast worked well for me too

So, I'm confused. If 10g is fine w/o fat. And, if fat blunts any insulin surge, then why wouldn't you be able to have more than 10g if you're including fat?

ahh *face palm* more than 10g of whey isolate will spike insulin making fat burning non-exsistent the rest of the day. Especially in the morning. space this out for 2-3 hours if that's all you want to take. anything more than that will not prove to be beneficial. Animal fats/proteins are a different story because they are not made of whey isolate. Using that shake with 50-50 in a meal won't be the same. However I'm sure you can do this PWO when you're done training and insulin levels are not as high like in the morning/first wake up.
