jjd040Memberit is my understanding (perhaps misguided) that whey, leucine, and eggs simply spike insulin without affecting glycogen levels. and it's also my understanding that if someone's glycogen stores are empty, they are basically in keto. so i'm wondering… on ULC days, what would the consequences be if i were to take 1 scoop of whey and 1 scoop of leucine PWO, followed by a couple egg-heavy meals? my theory is that you could benefit from minor strength gains by doing so. you would halt fat burning for the night, but your ketogenesis should be unaffected the very next morning, no? i would assume you are right back in fat-burning mode since glycogen went unaffected.i am trying to preserve muscle (and maybe make gains) without sacrificing too much of the benefits of keto. and i am wondering if this would be beneficial. i know Kiefer has recommended leucine during ULC days before, but not quite to this extent.thoughts?

Richard SchmittModeratorAs discussed many times, you want the spike PWO. Just the PWO shake, whey and leucine as well as creatine is best. This all depends on goals and protocol you're following as well. The spike will drop quickly so no need to worry about being back into keto, your body will adjust to going back. Just have a normal ULC meal maybe 30 minutes after the shake if you're having dinner after training. You'll preserve muscle mass by having the shake and making sure you're eating enough.

jjd040Memberthanks Tex.was very aware about wanting a spike PWO, but new to exploring the difference between pure insulin spikes (leucine, etc) vs. glycogen-related insulin spikes, and wasn't sure if i was shooting myself in the foot by spiking insulin just about every day (the only exceptions being my rest days)i'm assuming cheese and heavy cream fall under the same category as well.

Richard SchmittModeratorEverything you eat or consume will cause some sort of spike, fats help blunt those responses with protein. Having cheese well needs to be used in moderation, HWC is normally kept to a certain amount but yes all falls under a same category.
