Is there any scientifcly or otherwize proven benifits (long term) to the use of whey protein powder over whole food for building and maintaining muscle?I'm not trying to be Mr universe, I only want to increase my over all physical health,  I live in NZ where it's about $44 per kilo despite all the cows and green grass.I have orderd a multi vitamin + some fish oil suppliments, do I realy need to spend hundreds of dollars on highly proceessed powders? what will it contribute to my total happiness? Is the consuption of all theses suppliments mostly due to the marketing and consumerism cycle everyone is caught in, competitiveness taught in schools, fear of missing out or sexual competition, what motivates you? I lift weights because it gets me high.

What is really doesn't sit right with me is that a lot of our Australian whey and I'm sure even elsewhere worldwide comes from your neck of the woods. Yet it cost that much to get over there? Ludacris :/Sorry a bit off topic

I'm not an expert but it seems like most people use whey because it's a fast and easy source of protein. When you are trying to get in a large amount every day, it helps to know a certain amount can be taken easily. Additionally you can fine tune your nutrition with slow-absorbing proteins like casein.  Every recommendation I have ever heard has said that, if you can get it all through whole foods, you should.

I've always thought of it as a convenience, albeit a sub-optimal one.  Whey isolate is very bio-available, so its absorption post-workout (which is when I take it 90% of the time) makes it a quick and easy way to get 50g or more of protein quickly and easily when your body needs it the most.  If I had the urge in any way to eat 50g worth of steak or fish after working out I would, but I have no desire for those until lunch or dinner time.

Is the consuption of all theses suppliments mostly due to the marketing and consumerism cycle everyone is caught in, competitiveness taught in schools, fear of missing out or sexual competition, what motivates you?

You are right that whole foods are always best. But your general commentary on what we are all "caught" in is a bit much, and quite off base.  Perhaps a better pre-conceived notion you could have would be the fact that we all share the desire to improve ourselves.  Hopefully that's enough to focus on, and we can save social commentary for socio/political forums elsewhere.

ok, so its convenience/impatiants, I get the idea of wanting to improve ourselves but to what end? Do any of you use your inhanced physical mass for practical purposes or is it mostly aethstetics?

Assuming you mean impatience, I disagree.  You have a small window of time in which to ingest a significant amount of protein after a workout if you want to maximize recovery for your muscles.  It's with this in mind that people favor whey protein as a fast-digesting, effective source of protein.  Yes, it's more convenient than preparing a steak, and certainly more desirable in my case for that period of the day.I doubt I have to explain the practical purposes of being a strong human being.  Strength, a common pursuit among everyone I've read in this forum, translates positively to everything we do.  And yes, when you improve your physical appearance it has aesthetic and psychological benefits, so it's easy to see why people pursue both the former and the latter.

OP,  that is a really stupid question. ...Let me ask you something... would it be more practical or better for performance in that matter to bring a 12 oz steak and potatoes to the gym so i could ingest and receive it's benefits HOURS after i finish training or fast-acting casein hydrosylates with low osmolality carb powder that will IMMEDIATELY stop muscle catabolism and trigger Mtor/Protein Synthesis the second i walk out of the gym and continue hours later?  OP - if you are bench pressing 135 and struggling i would urge you to spend less money on supplements and start eating some serious food because supplements are NOT going to make much difference on such a novice level of training. If you have built enough muscle and your goal is to preserve that muscle while building MORE muscle and getting STRONGER than clearly................ supplements have a role in the grand schematic of things.  plain and simple!  Calling it a marketing scam is pretty weak.  After all, 99% of the information on DH is backed by or based off of some type of RESEARCH, not somebody's opinion.  As for "LONG TERM"  that's kind of irrelevant because if you stop eating and training what happens??  bye bye muscle.    Excessive muscle is pretty optional to the body, so if you want to keep it you have to supplement the body with what it needs.

Whey isolate raises glutathione levels, which is the most important antioxidant in the body.  You can eat a ton of fruit and vegetables, but those antioxidants are insignificant compared to glutathione.Whey isolate is also available very quickly post-workout resulting in more protein synthesis (muscle growth) post-workout.  However, for any other time of the day, consume whole food proteins.  They give a steady supply of amino acids to keep things going, where whey is in and out quickly. My advice for a gym newb:  Consume a scoop of whey post-workout (with leucine and, if you are not low carb, carbs) and whole food proteins any other time of the day.

There are no stupid questions. Protein powder gets pushed on me from every angle and I'd just like to push it back, because I can't afford it. If you could take a pill that would gain you 10lb of muscle over night would you take it? For me its about the experience of weight lifting, not so much the apearance.

BUDDY....... i've taken pills that have gained me 26 pounds overnight.  YOu have no goals do you?  if you are just going to go to the gym to "jazz-ercise" then i wouldn't spend a dime.  I'm having a really difficult time understanding your perception of lifting weights.  Do you think this is just some fad?

Maybe he just likes to enjoy lifting?  So BigR, you hate lifting and you just do it to get bigger?  Lifting is a form of exercise and exercise is fun, improves mood, and makes you feel better.  That is probably what he means.

If you put a little work into finding a whey protein at a good price (true nutrition, Amazon) and you determine the cost per gram of protein compared to whole foods, the whey protein will almost always come out cheaper.  To my knowledge, the only cheaper protein source is eggs.  Whey protein helps, but you don't need it.  Drink skim milk afterwards for a similiar effect, however milk is more expensive per gram of protein than something like whey concentrate.

Yes.  The relentless pursuit of muscle!  (as tnation calls it)What's fun about being weak? (no offense to OP or anyone)  lol  i used to hate going to the gym quite frankly.... until i got goals and started moving big weight... but that comes with hard work, not leisure.  I NEVER went to the gym with the intention of enjoying myself and conversing. I would think one would play sports or something else if they just wanted to simply enjoy themselves. Lifting weights without goals is like intuitively being stagnant and i don't see the point.... (although i'm trying here)  it's fun to get better at something, don't you think?

Well I enjoy lifting and I think others do as well.  To me ball sports are boring.  i enjoy myself much more when I am lifting than if were to play baseball, football, or basketball.

you also aren't average looking and your probably not a weakling either so it's easier to enjoy lifting, as do i.  honestly though, if you never got bigger/stronger/better looking physique would you be content and enjoy going to the gym curling the 20 pound dumbells while a female trainee asks to work in with you?  Lol    i'd be pissed
