There are no stupid questions. Protein powder gets pushed on me from every angle and I'd just like to push it back, because I can't afford it. If you could take a pill that would gain you 10lb of muscle over night would you take it? For me its about the experience of weight lifting, not so much the apearance.

BUDDY....... i've taken pills that have gained me 26 pounds overnight.  YOu have no goals do you?  if you are just going to go to the gym to "jazz-ercise" then i wouldn't spend a dime.  I'm having a really difficult time understanding your perception of lifting weights.  Do you think this is just some fad?

Maybe he just likes to enjoy lifting?  So BigR, you hate lifting and you just do it to get bigger?  Lifting is a form of exercise and exercise is fun, improves mood, and makes you feel better.  That is probably what he means.

If you put a little work into finding a whey protein at a good price (true nutrition, Amazon) and you determine the cost per gram of protein compared to whole foods, the whey protein will almost always come out cheaper.  To my knowledge, the only cheaper protein source is eggs.  Whey protein helps, but you don't need it.  Drink skim milk afterwards for a similiar effect, however milk is more expensive per gram of protein than something like whey concentrate.

Yes.  The relentless pursuit of muscle!  (as tnation calls it)What's fun about being weak? (no offense to OP or anyone)  lol  i used to hate going to the gym quite frankly.... until i got goals and started moving big weight... but that comes with hard work, not leisure.  I NEVER went to the gym with the intention of enjoying myself and conversing. I would think one would play sports or something else if they just wanted to simply enjoy themselves. Lifting weights without goals is like intuitively being stagnant and i don't see the point.... (although i'm trying here)

Well I enjoy lifting and I think others do as well.  To me ball sports are boring.  i enjoy myself much more when I am lifting than if were to play baseball, football, or basketball.

you also aren't average looking and your probably not a weakling either so it's easier to enjoy lifting, as do i.  honestly though, if you never got bigger/stronger/better looking physique would you be content and enjoy going to the gym curling the 20 pound dumbells while a female trainee asks to work in with you?  Lol    i'd be pissed

I'm sure he plans on progressing.  When first started to lift I did something very similar.  I didn't really have any goals to lift x amount of weight or to have a nice physique.  I just did it because it is good to exercise and it just made sense.  There is absolutely no logic to it, it just felt right.  And yes when I was fat and weak when I started out I enjoyed lifting, not as much as I do now, but it was enjoyable.  Kind of like how some people like to mow the grass or take things apart.  While the result is part of it, a lot of it is enjoying the journey.

agree 100% about the journey… to me actually having something sometimes isn't as enjoyful as attaining it through hard work, investment, perseverance… etc.  which is another thing people over look when bodybuilding…. it builds character!    OP  take note of that

Yeah I agree with both you to an extent but I enjoy lifting both for the lifting itself but more the satisfaction I get from progress! When I was fat and weak (I'm still weak;) ) i did enjoy lifting but i much more e joyed looking different in the mirror, the attention from girls and the self confidence. There was times when progress was slow and strength was stalling and the gym was definitely less fun. I think J enjoy the gym due the satisfaction I get from bettering myself and my health.

To me both parts are enjoyable. The journey aspect of it and seeing the results of my hard work. Whey is a way to speed up the progress. Also enjoying the “magic” pills people talk about.
