Brandon D ChristParticipantAfter having watched Kiefer's YouTube vids, I'm going to do:2 min walk, 1 min run hard x6 every other morning after a cup of black coffee + 200mg caffeine, regardless of whether I'm gyming/climbing that day.
Be fore warned, max effort for 1 min is really, really, hard, so mentally prepare yourself.

monsoonParticipantThis is what I think happens based on my experience. If you plan to do one minute, you will subconsciously hold back so you can make it through. If you do 30 seconds, you can go all out. That said, I'm not sure if it makes much of a difference: 30 seconds at 98% vs. 60 seconds at 96%?

Sorry but I don't get this - it just sounds like your ego talking? Resistance is resistance, whether it is a hill, a sled, a swimming pool or a machine. Someone using a bike or a rowing machine isn't necessarily working with any less intensity than someone swinging a kettle-bell; I think it is largely relative to the individual and what they are willing to put into the session. HIIT is about personal performance, I just don't see how that comment is constructive pshannon?
Maybe the language could have been better, but hes right. You're really able to go full out on a track/ using non machine methods. It really is much better. An elliptical will be less intense.
+1 An eliptical will not allow you to do HIIT properly. It requires too much coordination to control the machine and stay balanced. An exercise bike an excellent option though.
Also the Rower would be another machine to use, correct? If someone wanted to change things up a bit? I'm also considering saying Kettlebells.

I never used a rower, but I am gonna guess it could be used.
