RussiBKeymasterSo I have a bit of an emotional dilemma which goes something like this. My father is a big unit, he's 66 years old and for as long as I can remember he has been enjoying his whiskey and peanuts, slowly increasing his waist size and generally not eating as he could/should.A couple of years ago he had a minor heart attack and required a stent to be placed in his heart to keep one of his valves open - a pretty 'common' procedure for aging men in the UK when they experience this type of event. At the time though it was pretty horrendous and he subsequently got put onto a program of statins and a CR diet involving mainly veg soup and fish. He lost a lot of weight that way, as anyone would when going from a full fat and alcohol induced cardiac event to some form of normality. Over the past year or so though he has crept back into his old ways and the weight is coming back quite noticeably. His doctor is trying to restrict his diet again to help but considering his age, mental attachment to fatty food and condition I was wondering if CNS would be a better option for him?I'm relatively new to CNS but understand it does work. My dilemma is more regarding advising someone else to do it, who may not follow it as rigidly as he should and then ostensibly I may actually add to his problem, not help to fix it.Does anyone else have any experience with this? I know there are quite a few trainers out there who might have an opinion or someone with personal experience. Thanks guys, appreciate your thoughts!

FairyGuestCNS can be an extremely health promoting diet when real organic meat/eggs/butter are the primary foods consumed. Things you can do:1) Tell him to stop having breakfast, and to have a black coffee with double cream/Splenda tablet instead2) Get him in the habit of having bacon and eggs for brunch3) Fish/chicken salad for lunch4) Steak/meatballs/pork chop for dinner5) Ensure all cooking oils/fat are replaced with organic butterIf he does even two of these things his quality of life will improve and his chance of having a heart attack will go down. Start with breakfast and go from there.

Good advice Fairy. I don't want to end up in a war with our doctor either, though quite why my parents insisted on signing us up with a doctor called (I shit you not) Dr Love I have no idea. 😉 The guy looks like chef from South Park as well. Couldn't make it up.I haven't lived at home since I was 18 so logistically I'm not around to monitor and/or redirect actively. I guess that is also a concern - if I was at home I could cook for him etc. Difficult when you are reliant on people doing what they are told.

Brandon D ChristParticipantI have tried to convince my family members to do it, but dieting is not easy. Also Carb Nite IS NOT an easy diet for the average person to do.

MarcoMemberWell, I already talked my girlfriend and my parents in law into it and the results are awesome. I think it's pretty important that one realises the necessity for a diet change and identifies oneself with that particular diet. If they do it just because someone told them, they will have a bad time and probably fail. The most difficult part is in my experience to convince people to scip breakfast. Maybe you should save that for later. You should also listen to biojacked #30, rocky patel covers that topic in that one.

My parents want to lose weight, but I do not think they would have the discipline to follow this diet. Low carb diets are not easy to follow. Especially for my mother who lives off cereal, sandwiches, and sugary yogurt and claims red meat makes her sick. They are also not well educated and they wouldn't know what has carbs and what doesn't (yes even though the nutrition facts are on the side) and they wouldn't understand that having a couple cookies on a random night (not Carb Nite) would screw up their metabolism.

I think you might just be underestimating their abilities a tiny weeny bit 😉How to convince someone (this has worked for me):1) Brag about your results and how amazing the new diet you're doing is.2) Eat ice cream and cake in front of them3) Show them before after pics4) Repeat steps 1,2&3 until they ask to know more about the diet5) Tell them that they need to buy the CNS diet book (if they spend their money on the book they're more likely to read it and do it)6) Once they've read it, help them get the basics down

That's a good idea though my parents have seen me lose over 3 stone following a CR diet and regular exercise, so I may have to be slightly more tactical. Also, I'm not planning on sustaining a ULC diet over Christmas because it is an accident waiting to happen - that deserves another thread but welcome your thoughts (check new posts shortly). Thanks Fairy, love your no BS attitude to just getting the job done. There's something horribly efficient about you and I LIKE it! :-*

Yeah, just reread it and saw that too. That happens, when you translate directly from German to English ;D But I'm sure you got what I was trying to say.

TokyoLifterMemberI gave up on trying to talk my family into being healthy a long time ago. They never listen. If I gain muscle or lose fat, the only comments I get are "You are getting too muscular, it doesn't look good" or "Are you taking steroids?".Ignorant bunch.

Got that one too. I got a carpal tunnel syndrome on my right hand fixed quite some time ago and my mums "diagnosis" was that it had been caused by working out too much and the added forearm muscle pressing on the wrist. Always the first to justify laziness.

I think when people say that, they have the impression that we approach training the same way a woman who loses weight does, that is we try to fit the social ideal body. Most of us aren't trying to do that, we trying to be abnormal, plus we enjoy doing it, unlike the girl dieting. They don't understand because exercise is painful to them.
