Craig jonesParticipantI would still have to disagree. There must be a point where your theory is correct obviously but I think you greatly under estimate the ketogenic type diet. I don't think adding 50g of fat would do anything maybe a hell of a lot more fat. Don't be so paranoid and just go for it. Kiefer actually covers this quite regularly in the pod casts talking about a guy who got in touch with him wondering why he wasn't losing any weight. The guy was drinking cups of oil. He didn't gain weight he stayed the same weight. Obviously I would expect to put weight on doing this but the parameters of which you have to work with to over do it or even under do it are vast. And yeah that does differ from person to person but not many people would be drinking cups of oil. You will be fine eating as much fat as protein as recommended. Also when you modify a post it shows!

robbie78GuestI did not modify my post, I used strikthrough lettering on the word calories to make a point.I have been very strict with my macros, and gained weight. Dropped the amount of fat and protein and have started losing

Craig jonesParticipantI give up! Good luck buddy, only trying to help.Apologies for the slander lol. If your getting results keep doing what your doing. No hard feelings I hope. 🙂

robbie78GuestNone taken 😉 I'm not trying to preach, I'm just trying to share my experience to shed some light on my results and maybe help? Or deter? Other members. I'm 186 lbs some what muscular with decent lifts, I wish I could eat 186g of fat and 186g of protein and not gain.Question, compared to a ULC day how much mor volume of food do you Guys consume?

FroggerGuestMy grl friend last week put weight on by only having 2 meals a day cutting back. Told her it was working just fine on 3 meals with more food. She started eating 3 meals again the very next day and every day since has lost weight. Eat enough is the key I think. Don't starve. More calories equaled more weight loss in her case. She seen good results and thought well if I cut back more I will lose it quicker. WRONG!
Can I ask what her calorie deficit was (or how much she was eating if she didn't keep track of calories) both when she was eating too little and then when she ate more? Did she change anything else? Walking more or less? Different food?

Craig jonesParticipantNot sure on cals as we don't count them but breakfast would be 5 rashers of bacon and three eggs fried in butter /dinner would be maybe 3 pork rib steaks fried in butter and /tea would be 2 home made burgers probably 400g mince with cheese. Always had breakfast but was missing one of the other. Now doesn't really miss any.

NightcallGuestthere are common factors, like too much dairy (cheese is normally the first thing I strip from a 'tough-case'), to many plant fats (nuts, almond butter, olive oil, …) and the wrong type of fiber source (psyllium fiber and leafy-greens are top culprits)
So no dairy, no plant fats, no leafy greens and starches/sugar only 1 night a week... And you lose weight you say? Magic.Carbnite is looking every day a little more like Vince Gironda's steak & egg diet.

joeyodeGuestKiefer, I LOVE that you're back to participating, here. I hope you keep it up, even when you get your staff sussed out.You said,
(psyllium fiber and leafy-greens are top culprits)
These are bad? I thought these were two of the better things to take in during the low carb portions.
I don't think other fiber sources were addressed. I'm not looking to take in 25g of fiber a day necessarily, but at least a mild amount to keep the system moving. So what do others do if not spinach/leafy greens or a fiber supplement?

Lasse ElsbakParticipantFat has the same effect. I used to take a lot of fiber, but I don't need it anymore. You have to taper off though..

zewskiMemberHow crazy you can go on the actual Carb Nite depends greatly on how fat you USED to be and how muscular you currently are. If you're leaning out and you're chunks, you don't need to worry. If you've lost 40 lbs (especially on another diet and you're transitioning to CN), you need to be more cognizant of your refeeds and staging the macro breakdown appropriately. If you're jacked, there's really not much you do wrong on a Carb Nite.
How?

ecirpanadGuest4) The scale is the great deceiver. Some people (typically older women) don't even see a weight change for up to 6 weeks (after the initial 10 days). But their clothes fit better and different and muscle definition suddenly comes in. These diets (both CBL and CN) create true physical recomposition of the body, so the scale becomes a literally useless tool.
I may be one of your 'typical older women.' Regarding 'muscle definition,' are we building muscle even if we aren't lifting? Or do we just start to see the muscle because layers of fat start disappearing? In other words, can my muscles be shaping up even without the exercise? (Although I am climbing a hill every day and doing HIIT after carb nite). And yes, I hate my scale.
July 17, 2012 at 1:41 am #59110
zewskiMemberIt's the latter. Less fat=better definition. You won't really build muscle but there's less covering it up.

shaerowMemberWhat's worked for me, honestly, is just waiting until later afternoon to eat real foods (fat are exclusionary to this)… I usually wait for 3 hours after I wake (Say, 8 AM, 11 AM), then have 30 g fat (tbsp coconut oil/tbsp butter), then wait for about 2 1/2 hours to have another tbsp coconut oil (Actually at 2 PM), then start eating my proteins starting at 5PM mixed with fats (I'll use flax seed now- I actually notice I don't feel so bloated and carry onto less) and vegetables (spinach/romaine w/ broccoli, asparagus, olives)… I've usually used cheese, noticed nothing bad as long as I ate it with a meal, and not separate, and just have 2 big meals, ending by 9 PM, crashing at 12 AM… Hope this helps, or relates to anyone. P.S.- unless I lift, I never go beyond .8 g protein per lb lean body mass. I'm also going to experiment with no cheese, and I made the switch from olive oil to flax seed oil, I think it's better, I'll give it another week to see how I feel

hanflanGuestUgh. I feel the pain of anyone who is having troubles making CNS work for them. I started Carb Nite June 25 and have GAINED around 8 lb and 2% bf. This is INSANE to me! I mean, I realize if I'm eating too much I'm going to gain weight, but I had no idea that I would struggle so much. I am about ready to give up on the whole thing.I'm a 23 year old woman, 5'8" and 148 lb (was 139-140 lb a couple months ago), and am approximately 29% body fat. Of course, I've only measured using a scale, and I think it runs a little high but still. Not where I want to be. I like to lift heavy, but only get 2-3 workouts in a week these days. I don't do cardio except a little HIIT after lifting sometimes. Here are my current guesses on why my clothes fit so much tighter than they did before I started Carb Nite:Ace-K: It's in everything and it's so hard not to drink it. I drink about 2 cans of diet pop a day and the occasional sugar free jello, etc.Nuts: I eat a lot of them. Especially almonds. Are monosaturated fats that much of a problem?Calories: I think I eat too much. My fat is always higher than my protein, and I've been taking in about 300-500 extra calories (above maintenance) a day. I think if I stayed around 1800-2000 I would be fine but I honestly get bored and sad that I can't eat carbs so I load up on HWC ice-cream and cheese. Egh. I'm an all-or-nothing kind of girl who used to eat only 1300 calories daily (got down to 108 lb at one point) only to fall into binge eating later that year. In general I have a hard time with moderation. Carb Nites: Maybe I go overboard? Do women need to eat less for this to work? I usually eat a lot of sweets, sometimes candy and sometimes (I hate to say it) some fruit 🙂 I ALWAYS feel super full almost immediately after eating my first carbs. It's seriously miserable, because I feel like I could throw up all night. NOT what I expected when starting CNS.I also tend to eat some kind of treat BEFORE dinner because, well, I feel like it. Is that a no no? My last carb nite included about 5 small brownies (gah!), a white bread roll, grilled chicken with spinach and tomatoes, gummy bears and a large bowl of ice cream. I'm ashamed to say that some carb nites are even bigger. My timing might also need some tweaking. I have experienced four carb nites now, the first one after nine days, and the last three only four days apart. Is it possible that I need to wait five or more days between?Any help is appreciated! The hard truth might get my rear in gear. I am pretty depressed about the way things are going. I have a terrible body image and low self-esteem that has crippled me for quite some time. I would love to have a little success and finally lose that "last five pounds" of fat.

Unless it's only vitamin casings, don't consume anything unnatural and get in the habit of ditching the diet soda- go with water, coffee, green tea (seltzer might be a good start to getting in the habit of not drinking "diet" soda)- the sweeteners in "diet" soda dull your leptin levels (and you have the adipose to really, really express it), screw up your hormones and body's metabolism with it. Ditch it, and I guarantee that you will lose a ton, and do some kind of intermittent fasting- do something like 16:8 w/ fats with the ending 4 hours to that pattern consisting of food (again, make sure it's natural, and get flax seed oil, and quality beef/bacon/eggs). Start taking walks, too- I remember when I had weighed 250 a couple years ago (unimaginable body fat, I'd think), I ate less and later at night, and walked often- lost 35 lbs in 5 weeks.
